NYC2Way Makes Navigating the New York Marathon Easy

If you are in town to run or watch the famed New York Marathon, be prepared for a lot of excitement and a lot of traffic.  Using NYC 2 Way transportation during your stay will make getting around the event and busy time easier.

The New York City Marathon is one of the most prestigious long distance races in the United States, and contestants come from all over the world to participate.  Spots in the race are so in demand that they are given out based on a lottery system.  The race is held in early November every year and has been run every year since it began in 1970 except for 2012 when Hurricane Sandy devastated communities only the week before.  Although the race was canceled, many runners still showed up to help with the clean up efforts.

The first NYC marathon was organized by the New York Road Runners Club presidents Vincent Chiappetta and Fred Lebow in 1970.  This is the same organization responsible for organizing the marathon ever since.  The original course took runners on a big loop around Central Park several times.  127 runners started the race with only 55 crosses the finish line. Compare that to 2011, when 46,795 runner officially crossed the finish line.  In 1976, as a way to celebrate the bicentennial, George Spitz, New York City auditor suggested rerouting the course to cover all five boroughs.  This was supposed to be a one time event, but the race was so successful that it has been run this way ever since.

The 2011 winner was a Kenyan man by the name of Geoffrey Mutai who covered the 26 mile course in 2:05:06, breaking the course record which had held strong for ten years.  Mutai also won the Boston Marathon that year.

If you are planning to run the race, there are a few things you should know.  You cannot just show up and run. First you must register and gain entry in advance.  When you arrive before the race, you have to register at Javits Center.  This is where you will pick up your number.   The race begins on Staten Island and you along with forty two thousand runners will be trying to get there. It is best to leave transportation to the professionals of NYC Two Way who will see that you get to the starting line on time.

Remember that November weather in New York City can be a bit chilly.  One insiders tip is to buy cheap track outfit to wear until the race begins.  You can simply leave these at the starting line.  Although this sounds like littering, it really isn’t! Those discarded clothes are gathered and taken to homeless shelters across the city.

There will be two million spectator there to cheer you on.  If you really want them to cheer for you, write your name in big, bold letters on your shirt.  You will have people shouting your name and yelling encouragements the whole way!  There are even apps available for your friends and family to track your progress even if they aren’t there! Jersey Boys

Another famous group is featured in this musical, not just in the soundtrack but within the story itself.  The featured band is Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons which were pop and rock icons from the 60s.  Even individuals who do not like musicals will appreciate this documentary style show, with amazing songs peppered throughout a great balance of romance, comedy, and tragedy.

Wicked

This thoughtful musical is based on a book by Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is based on Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story of the musical runs parallel with the Wizard of Oz, with a lot of the same characters.  Only when we meet them this time, we learn more about their back story and why the wicked witch ultimately does what she does.  The lines between good and bad are a little blurry, and you will walk away with a new perspective and a lot of catchy tunes in your head.

If you have ever had a doubt about the legitimacy of street performers, consider this: Ben Franklin was a 12 year old Philadelphia street performer of colonial America.  Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were subway performers during a time in which it was illegal.  Really, for as long as streets have existences, so have its performers.  Now, the idea of street performing has been so embraced by New York City culture, that there is a New York City Street Performing Advocacy Project to protect and promote street performance as a legitimate art form and occupation. They are as much a part of New York as NYC 2 Way transportation services.

Now, as you walk the busy New York City streets, you have a chance to see some genuine New York City talent.  Street performing has gone from a nucane to and attraction.   There are several notable New York City street performers that would be a shame to miss if you are in the area.

The Naked Cowboy

It would be a deserve to the art if the Naked Cowboy were not at least mentioned in a piece about New York City street performers.  He is possibly the most famous NYC street performer and has actually turned his bit into a franchise.  You cannot miss him.  He can be seen in Times Square, holding a guitar, wearing a cowboy hat and some tighty whiteys.  Although his street performing career began with his clothes on, he immediately gained more attention and money after taking his friend’s advice and performed only in his underwear.

The Naked Cowboy can now be seen making guest appearances on television and movies, music festivals and parties across the country.  He is also an official marriage officiant.  So if you come to New York City to tie the knot, this would certainly be a unique and unforgettable option.

Musicians

Some noteworthy musicians got their start from busking, like John Butler and Tracy Chapman.  And several famous musicians often take to the streets for impromptu performances, like Mike Doughty and Bon Jovi.  Other famous musicians, like Paul McCartney, Sting, and world renowned classical violinist, have donned a disguise to play on some crowded NYC street or subway platform.  It just goes to show you that you really never know what you may run into in New York City.

Miming to the Next Level

Although you will still run into the traditional black clothed, white faced mime, the art of miming has been taken to the next level by several street performers.  One spin off of this historic art form is the statue.  Performers will paint their skin, wear their clothes, and stand still in a way that resembles a stone, silver, or even golden statue.  The artists are so focused on their craft that you may jump when they move, because you thought they were an actual statue.

Dance Crews

Major League Baseball is Coming To New York

This year, the 2013 Major League Baseball All Star Game will be held in New York City. From the Home Run Derby to the many other activities taking place, the highly awaited mid-season game featuring fan favorites and statistics leading all-stars will be hosted in Citi Field. The beautiful stadium, home of the New York Mets, is located in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in the New York City borough of Queens. New York City is home to millions of Irish descent, but on March 17^th, everybody is Irish.  In NYC, festivities abound across the city, but the main draw is the St. Patrick’s Day parade.  Started in 1762, the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade is the largest in the world, as well as being the oldest regularly occurring civilian parade.  With about 150,000 marchers each year, the 5 hour procession travels 1.5 miles down 5^th Avenue to the delight of the hundreds of thousands in attendance.

Another nod to the many immigrants in New York City, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, held on the second Sunday in June, is a colorful affair down 5^th Avenue, where the foods, culture, and sounds of American protectorate Puerto Rico can be fully appreciated.

Independence Day

While every city and town across America celebrates Independence Day, the fireworks, parades, and celebrations of New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. are unparalleled.  New York, however, is the only place to see the bombs bursting in air next to the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of freedom and coming to America for a better life, so that gives a bit of an edge.

Must-See Cultural Events in New York City

New York City is a world hub. People from all over the globe can be found living in the city. For this reason, the culture of New York is an eclectic mix. Exploring this culture is one of the best and most fun things to do in the city. There are countless museums, fairs, and festivals to take advantage of. Explore the real NYC and check out some of the must-see cultural events in the city.

The Cloister Museum and Gardens has a fantastic collection of medieval art, architecture, and horticulture, and NYC Two Way is the best way to visit this museum located at the top of a hill in Fort Tyrone Park. The gardens are designed after plots from the Middle Ages and offer great insight into gardening and farming during that time period.

Visiting the New York City gardens is a great way to get some sun and experience the different cultures of the Five Boroughs. These public gardens offer different installations seasonally.
